Web 2.0 (pronounced "web two point Oh") was conceived about four years ago. This new breed of websites has changed how users communicate information on the internet. Another idea has evolved called, School Library 2.0. The idea is to revolutionize school libraries, so users will have access to Web 2.0 technologies. One librarian, Christopher Harris from the Infomancy (http://schoolof.info/infomancy) blog defines School Library 2.0 as being a digital re-shifting of the school library. That is using new tools to accomplish traditional activities in a more collaborative and interactive environment.
A book talk or discussions can now be done using a blog or a podcast. Using the library integrated system, librarians can create an interface that allows students to build a virtual collection of their favorite books just by copying a record into their bookshelf. Spalding created LibraryThing.com which allows users to catalog their personal libraries by downloading MARC records from the Library of Congress.
This is an opportunity for librarians to market their services. These services must transcend to every student and teacher in the school wherever learning is taking place. The school library needs to keep its status as the information hub of the school. Librarians might consider filming a video demonstrating how to use a database that a classroom teacher can share with students. The library system can be used to help reading specialists assess students' progress by tracking the use of leveled readers and other books.
Libraries limited with technology, can create affordable ideas like physical services from other libraries, staff feedback, or surveying current patrons.
Always wondered what educational value Twitter had. Well, here are some ideas for librarians. Short messages can be left about: events, lectures, book sales, building hours, or available hours. Sharing a tip about how to find a book or accessing information online or in the building could turn out to be an interesting activity. Additional posts could be links to stories about libraries or literacy.
