WEEK # 4 RESPONSE TO PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP PROJECT

FOLLOW UP.....
I think I am suppose to add to my blog the places I have thought about publishing my project to. The three journals are: Learning & Leading, TechTrends, and School Library Monthly. I have decided to go for School Library Monthly because my project focuses on Reader's Theater. I want other School Librarians to be aware of this amazing literature strategy that takes little preparation. It's ideal for a librarian with a fixed schedule. I have found that students love it. I have the guidelines for submission, and the types of manuscripts they accept. I have subscribed to this journal before, so I am familiar with the articles.

WEEK # 4 RESPONSE TO K. DAVIS BLOG

K. DAVIS BLOG........
As of earlier this week, I was convinced that my AR project was best suited to be shared solely as a presentation or training session for my colleagues or administration at my school. The project was intended to address the use of technology at the school and how my colleagues and I could better implement that technology to the benefit of our foreign language students. To my surprise, through some brief research, I was able to find a venue outside of my current work environment where I might be able to present my project.

This coming October the Association of Christian School International (ACSI) is conducting several annual conferences one of which will take place in Orlando, Fl. This conference will focus on a variety of topics related to education in private Christian schools and my current school, on which I focused my research, is a part of this category. ACSI has opened the conference to speakers who want and are able to present on variety of topics. The conference speakers must focus their presentation on certain learning outcomes. The outcome that I believe would best suit my research is "[Students will] know how to utilize resources including technology to find, analyze, and evaluate information."

This topic would allow me to take my research findings and present them as an example of the ways that students could utilize technology in the area of foreign language study. The Web 2.0 tools that I discovered through my review of literature and eventually used in my research cycles could serve as the examples of tools that would help students to find sources in the target foreign language and analyze and evaluate these authentic sources of that target language. I am sure that I would have to find a compelling way to disseminate my research to be prepared to present at the conference, but I am glad to at least have found another venue for presentation.

This is very exciting. I read both blogs about presenting for your staff and ACSI. I can tell you have put a lot thought into what areas you would like to focus on. If you have the time, I think you should present to your staff and ACSI. Good luck to you.

WEEK # 4 RESPONSE TO PATTI DURESKY BLOG

Patti Duresky Blog.........
A book I have my Advanced Placement Studio Art students read is "Art and Fear: Observations on the Perils( and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland. This book reminds me of the "Art of Possibility" by Zander, because it takes the observation of the unknown and brings it to light. Fear can become a part of our life and in some cases - it can rule your life. We grapple with daily fears that invade our thoughts and destroy our creativity. Creating art means working in the face of uncertainty, making the work you want to make- means finding nourishment in the work itself. Aside from the act of creation and execution there could quite possibly be no more reward. You must accept yourself as a person who has something to say and the value of sharing it publicly no matter the outcome. "In large measure becoming an artist consists of learning to accept yourself, which makes your work personal, and in following your own voice, which makes your work distinctive." ( Bayles & Orland). Vision must be the driving force behind execution. Your job is to develop an imagination of the possible.
Tolerance for uncertainty is the prerequisite for succeeding. If you act out of fear, your fears come true - because fear has become your focus. It takes a lot of practice to learn enough to improve. The seed for your next art work lies embedded in the imperfections of your current piece. When you court approval from an audience it puts a dangerous amount of power in the hands of that audience. Pure communication takes place between you and your work. Concept can only become reality if you have the confidence to compete. This competition is an internal one of going from better to best. If you do it for anyone else- you are illustrating their voice and not yours.
Art also has the dubious distinction of being one profession in which you routinely earn more by teaching it than doing it. Personally, when I teach my energy is expended in and through my students. If you try to continue being an artist while being a teacher - it's similar to chasing two rabbits- both are going to allude you and scamper away.I know I can be successful at either one but deep down inside I know my true calling is to cultivate the talents of others instead of promoting myself. It even hurts a bit as I write this but some choices we make in life are not for ourselves but for the betterment of others.Part of me screams to have my way and the other part sits in a rocking chair and shakes it's head and says," Child, at the end of the day, when your head hits the pillow, do you want to be remembered for a canvas- or the changed heart of a child?"

Wow, what a blog. I don't know where to begin. First I will commend you on your courage to put your students before yourself. I do agree with your thoughts about fear. Once that fear has control, it's hard to let go. I have health issues that cause fears in my life, and I fight them everyday. It takes a lot of practice to learn how to tolerate your fears. I have a disease called, Lupus. My therapist told me once don't let this disease rule your life. Believe me I try the best I can for this disease to be put on the back burner. When you don't feel good, it's hard to ignore the pain.

WEEK # 4 READING THE ART OF POSSIBILITY CHAPTERS 10-12

In Chapter 10, there were several connections that I had. The first one on page 144 when the player came in early in the Italian Symphony, and Ben knew by stepping onto that podium there were risks that things wouldn't turn out exactly as he anticipated. As teachers, we take risks every day when we stand in front of our children. We just never know what they are going to say or do, especially the little ones. Just the other day one of my second graders walks into the library and says aren't you glad that jerk from survivor didn't win. I told her that survivor isn't for little girls to watch. I am hoping this is just something she heard on TV or from an adult talking. But still to walk up to an adult and say this at that age is amazing. I asked a little boy from my kindergarten class if he told his parents about an assembly he participated in at school, and he says no my dad is in jail. I felt awful. You just never know.

On page 149 the authors talk about apologizing. Someone can't authentically apologize if he/she doesn't believe they are wrong, according to a shared measured of responsibility. I absolutely think it's nonsense to make a child say they are sorry if they don't mean it. When doing this, I believe the child gets the wrong message of what that word means. The child needs to learn that just saying sorry doesn't make everything ok. They need to understand that their behavior needs to change along with the verbal apology.

On page 152 when Roz steps in to help Ben deal with his problem concerning Cora. Roz tells Ben that you can always find within yourself the source of any problem you have.
I have found this to be true. It may have taken me longer to figure this out than Ben and a lot of therapy, but I found that there are reasons for the problems I have whether I like it or not.

WEEK # 4 PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP PART 3

PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP PART 3
My favorite part of this assignment was researching journals. I enjoyed the discovery of new material. I found two journals Learning & Leading and TechTrends that I would like to subscribe to myself. Although, I have decided to try School Library Monthly. Reader's Theater was the focus of my AR project. One of the main things I learned and want to share is the value of Reader's Theater, and how it can be incorporated with any subject with little effort. Also, school librarians have such a fixed schedule, I want them to know that the preparation time is minimal. There are many ways to use technology with Reader's Theater, I audio recorded my students.

WEEK # 4 RESPONSE TO WIMBA SHARING RESPONSE TO PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP PART 2

WIMBA SHARING PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP PART 2
I wanted to comment on Monday, May 24 wimba session sharing our publishing/leadership projects. Yes, we were a quiet group, but I felt it went very well. I want to say I appreciate everyone's suggestions and comments about my project. Like I said in the wimba session, I was disappointed about the way my project turned out, and you ladies and one gentlemen put my mind at ease. I am going to focus on What Can I Do Now! I can't change the past. Thanks again for all your support.

WEEK # 3 PUBLISHING/LEADERSHIP RESPONSE PART 1

I have chosen to write about the Publishing/Leadership Project because I wrote about the Summary Project in the other post. I would like to publish to either Learning & Leading, Tech Trends, School Library Monthly or School Librarian's Workshop. I have read a little about the process and so far the best thing to do right now is to read the articles in the magazines to get an understanding about the format they would be looking for. I am not familiar with Learning & Leading and Tech Trends so I am in the process of reading some articles from the magazines. Now it's on to the writing of the AR page for the project.
